Metabolic Testing

medgem small image 2.jpgMany factors such as age, height, weight, body composition and gender can affect one’s metabolism. The MedGem® device, an indirect calorimeter, can measure your resting metabolic rate (RMR) to determine the number of calories the body burns to perform basic bodily functions (such as heart rate, brain activity, breathing, etc). A person’s RMR can represent up to 75% of the total metabolism. Determining an accurate resting metabolic rate is important in evaluating a person’s calories needs for weight loss or gain.

How Does It Work?

The measurement is easy to administer and provides immediate results. You simply need to relax and breathe into the device for approximately 7-10 minutes. A report is generated that allows for a personalized meal plan based on your individual calorie needs.

Guidelines for Accurate Testing:
  • 1. Do not eat or consume caffeine 4 hours prior to testing (water is allowed).
  • 2. Do not exercise 4 hours prior to testing.
  • 3. Avoid smoking or nicotine 1 hour prior to testing.
Interventions to Increase Metabolism:
  • 1. Do not skip meal; eat every 3-4 hours.
  • 2. Do not restrict your intake below 1000-1200 calories.
  • 3. Get adequate sleep 7-8 hours per night.
  • 4. Include strength training exercise to increase lean body mass.
